Abu Dhabi Police: Smart Towers Project Still Underway

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, July 2nd 2015 [ME NewsWire]

Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director General of Central Operations at Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, asserted that the Smart Traffic Towers Project developed by the Abu Dhabi Police is still in the pipeline and is not operational yet. He particularly refuted the accuracy of the information published on Wednesday by one of the daily newspapers in this regard.

He said: “Even though the published article can be regarded as a positive message that most police institutions around the world may take no heed of; the Abu Dhabi Police refuse to take credit for an undertaking that has not been completed yet. Ensuring the accuracy and validity of information is a must; and should be given priority, before making compelling headlines about projects or initiatives that are still under consideration or in the pipeline.”

Brigadier Al Harithi stressed the need to validate the accuracy of information when sourcing news related to the services provided to the public, which should not be material for getting scoops. He also emphasized the importance of sourcing information from responsible, accredited and reliable sources. He noted that the Abu Dhabi Police are keen on making official and regular announcements about development projects, in order to inform the public of the details associated with these projects before they become fully operational; upon completion of the experimental stages and ascertaining positive results to avoid any potential drawbacks.

Phase III data published in The Lancet Oncology shows a significant overall survival benefit of Giotrif® (afatinib) compared to Tarceva® (erlotinib) (...)

INGELHEIM, Germany - Monday, July 6th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Phase III data published in The Lancet Oncology shows a significant overall survival benefit of Giotrif® (afatinib) compared to Tarceva® (erlotinib) in patients with previously treated advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the lung

Boehringer Ingelheim today announced The Lancet Oncology has published results from the LUX-Lung 8 trial (NCT01523587). LUX-Lung 8 is the largest, prospective Phase III head-to-head trial directly comparing two EGFR-directed treatments. Afatinib* was tested versus erlotinib, an approved and recommended treatment in this setting according to international guidelines, in advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lung progressing after treatment with first-line platinum-based chemotherapy. Treatment options for SCC of the lung are limited and this type of lung cancer is associated with a poor prognosis, with less than 5% of patients with advanced SCC surviving for five years or longer.

While afatinib is not yet approved for use in patients with SCC, the study showed that treatment with afatinib, an irreversible ErbB Family Blocker, resulted in superior progression-free survival (PFS, primary endpoint) and overall survival (OS, key secondary endpoint) compared to erlotinib in this patient population.

Dr. Mehdi Shahidi, Medical Head, Solid Tumour Oncology, Boehringer Ingelheim commented: “The ErbB family of receptors plays an important role in the development of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, and is a valid therapeutic target for this type of cancer. The broader and irreversible ErbB blockade of afatinib may explain the superiority shown in LUX-Lung 8 over erlotinib, an EGFR inhibitor already approved in this setting. We are pleased with the publication of LUX-Lung 8 data in The Lancet Oncology and based on the improvement in overall survival with the use of afatinib, we are in the process of preparing regulatory submissions.”

Previously reported data demonstrated that the LUX-Lung 8 study met its primary endpoint as afatinib significantly improved PFS compared to erlotinib. In addition, afatinib extended OS of patients to a median of 7.9 months compared to 6.8 months on erlotinib, reducing the risk of death by 19%. In an updated PFS analysis, performed at the time of the OS analysis, patients treated with afatinib had a median PFS of 2.6 months compared to 1.9 months for erlotinib. More patients reported an improvement in overall well-being/quality of life with afatinib compared to erlotinib and the rate of severe adverse events was similar between the two treatment arms with differences observed in the incidence of certain adverse events. See the online publication for full details.

*Afatinib is approved in a number of markets, including the EU, Japan, Taiwan and Canada under the brand name GIOTRIF® and in the US under the brand name GILOTRIF® for use in patients with distinct types of EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC. Registration conditions differ internationally, please refer to locally approved prescribing information. Afatinib is under regulatory review by health authorities in other countries worldwide. Afatinib is not approved in other indications.

Infosecurity Middle East Launch Event at ISNR 2016

Cyber-Security Spending Expected to Increase by 2019

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, July 1st 2015 [ME NewsWire]

The 7th edition of the International Exhibition for National Security and Resilience (ISNR 2016), which is scheduled to take place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) in Abu Dhabi on 15th -17th March, 2016, will witness the debut of a leading international event, Infosecurity Middle East.

Infosecurity Middle East is a highly respected international brand in the information security industry and in 2016 will be a co-located exhibition with ISNR.  Infosecurity Middle East will provide an opportunity for regional governments, critical infrastructure, major public institutions, IT security firms, and cyber-security professionals to review the latest trends and innovative solutions to ensure the security of business information and IT infrastructure.

World countries see cyber-crime as a growing threat, and are set to invest heavily on cyber security over the next four years.

In 2014, according to a security report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the number of information security incidents rose by 48 per cent to 42.8m, compared to 2013.

The Cisco 2014 Annual Security Report documents unprecedented growth of advanced attacks and malicious traffic against the Middle East region; particularly in the Energy sector, which is among the top five most-targeted industries by cyber-criminals and malware attacks in 2014, according to report.

Additionally, the global energy sector was subject to a 300% higher malware encounter rate than the median industry. This indicates that investment in cyber security is a critical issue for governments and corporations alike.

Another report by MarketsandMarkets shows that regional governments will have to spend upwards of USD 9.5 billion on cyber-security by 2019; to support governments and enterprises collaboration to implement strict laws and regulations for securing networks.

Nicky Dawson Group Exhibition Director – at Reed Exhibitions noted that cyber security requires constant follow up of the latest solutions, advanced technologies that are rapidly evolving. She also said that the constant change and evolution of the internet and related technologies paves the way for further cyber attacks against governments and businesses alike both regionally and internationally.

Adding further, she said: “Cyber security was the key topic that was discussed during this year’s World Economic Forum. All participants have agreed that it represents a threat to national security. In this context, the launch of Infosecurity Middle East will bring a valuable addition to the rapidly growing regional information security market, with more than 20 years of experience in cyber security in Europe.”

Nicky Dawson also noted that ISNR is the third biggest international exhibition and conference on national defense in the world, and brings countries from all over the world together to check most recent solutions in national security area. Under the guidance and direction of the UAE's Ministry of Interior, ISNR was established as a dedicated platform for countries from around the world to view and source the world's latest homeland security solutions.

In conclusion, Dawson indicated that ISNR 2016, which will take place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) in Abu Dhabi on 15th -17th March, 2016, is expected to bring together 500 exhibitors from 45 countries. The exhibition will occupy a total area of about 27,000 square meters, where exhibitors will showcase their security solutions to 20,000 visitors from over 90 countries; 18,000 specialists and decision-makers from public and private sectors regionally and internationally, and 150  regional and international government and corporate buyers.
