Discussing the Public’s Proposals to Reduce Traffic Accidents

During a visit to the Police Departments’ Complex on Tuesday, Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, reviewed the key objectives advocated by the MoI’s ‘Innovation Lab’, which was recently launched by the ministry, in line with the wise leadership’s announcement of 2015 as the year of innovation in the UAE.   

His Highness insisted on following-up on a number of ‘Innovation Lab’ workshops, which are organized by the Directorate General of Strategy and Performance Development at the Ministry of Interior, in order to develop innovative solutions to the different challenges facing the UAE society that are closely related to the ministry’s tasks.

Major General Dr. Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, explained: “The innovation lab concept came in response to the Ministry of Interior’s directives on the need to adopt purposeful proposals submitted by community members and discuss the possibility of implementing them, so as to enhance the services provided by the police to the public and upgrade these services in the best possible way”.

The Secretary General added that the ‘Innovation Lab’ is based on active participation from members of the public, by sharing their innovative ideas and proposals via the Ministry of Interior’s different social media platforms. “This approach would allow us to better identify the various challenges that are facing the UAE society, in order to brainstorm innovative ideas to overcome these challenges, and then analyze and study them through these workshops,” he continued.

Colonel Mohammed Hamid bin Dalmouj Al Dhaheri, Strategy and Performance Development Director General, at the Ministry of Interior, said that the ‘Innovation Lab’ concept commenced with the launch of the hashtag # The Innovation-Lab-of the Ministry –of Interior on the MoI’s social networking sites (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Google+). People were urged to provide their suggestions on topics that need to be developed and enhanced using the #hashtag, or to submit their ideas via SMS on the phone number allocated for this end 3344.

For his part, Major Mohammed Ismail Al Harmoudi, Head of the Complaints and Suggestions Department at the Directorate General of Strategy and Performance Development, Ministry of Interior, noted that the workshops aim to discuss the public’s proposals with the aim of developing innovative, practical and realistic solutions. Adding further, he said: “The ministry had launched the ‘Innovation Lab’ initiative in mid-June, and has been receiving community members’ proposals and views via the ministry’s different pages on social networking sites in order to collect the best solutions and ideas to overcome the challenges facing the UAE society that are closely related to the ministry’s tasks.”

Major Al Harmoudi also noted: “As a part of the workshops, attendees watched a documentary film about the ‘Innovation Lab’. The ‘traffic accidents’ topic was chosen, following thorough analysis of the ideas and proposals submitted by the public via the Innovation Lab over the past two months. The ‘traffic accidents’ topic was the most mentioned by participants, as a major challenge that needs to be addressed in all possible ways, especially through the innovative solutions submitted by the public.”

Attendees also discussed the methodology adopted by the ‘Innovation Lab’, using the ‘Innovation café’ tool, by which topics of discussion are submitted to groups of people, who brainstorm ideas, develop a set of activities and creative initiatives; and provide priority classification of these activities and initiatives. The groups exchange ideas and review notes in order to find the optimal final solution; then a member of the group provides a brief summary about the final solution, collects enquiries, and discusses ways to improve and develop the efficiency of the proposed solutions.

The workshops were attended by representatives of government agencies, notably the Federal Traffic Council, the ‘Creativity Development Program’, the Emirates Traffic Safety Society and the Automobile and Touring Club of the United Arab Emirates; alongside representatives of the Harvard Alumni Association.

MOI: HEMAYATI Application to communicate with children around-the-clock

Calling for deepening the concept of student safety

The Ministry of Interior renewed its call for parents to use the HEMAYATI  (meaning ‘my protection’) smartphone application with the start of the new school year in order to protect and enhance the safety of children. The application allows parents to communicate with their children around-the-clock, and includes a built-in feature that enables children to send distress calls to their parents when they feel threatened. It also provides the ability to forward the signal to Operation Rooms with a single click in the form of a “Smart SOS”, which will be given priority with a response time of only four minutes.

The HEMAYATI Application is available at the Apple Store for iOS compatible iPhones and iPads, and at Google Play for Android compatible smartphones. The smart application embodies the directives and efforts of the police leadership to use smart technology within the framework of the Federal Government’s UAE Vision 2021. The vision aims to rank the UAE as one of the safest countries in the world by achieving a total sense of security and safety, and by reducing  response time for emergency calls to just four minutes. By employing the latest technological means, the government aims to achieve the Abu Dhabi 2030 vision, which would place the UAE Government as one of the top five e-governments in the world.

Through providing children with the ability to directly call their parents for help when they feel threatened; the HEMAYATI Application denotes the keenness of the Ministry of Interior to improve customer services and to achieve its vision according to the UAE’s National Agenda for the next seven years in the fields of police and security work.

Lt. Colonel Faisal Mohammed Al Shammari, Executive Director of the MoI’s Smart Government Program, explained that the use of the application requires registration in the HEMAYATI system. To do so, the user must enter their ID number, and upon receiving a message with a PIN code generated by the system, the user must enter the PIN. This process verifies the identity of the phone owner. The registration is completed directly through the application itself. The user can send an invitation message to add his wife to the account. To do so, the user should enter the wife’s ID number and e-mail address. The wife will then receive an e-mail containing a link with the terms of use and conditions, which she should accept in order to complete the registration process. In order to add a new member to a group, enter the person’s ID number, and press “Add Location”. To add a location, the user may press the “+” sign, and enter the location name. The user may also navigate the map to find the location, by using the “Use Current Location” to find the user’s location on the map. Finally, press “Add Location”.

He noted that the HEMAYATI Application can be activated by parents only. “It is specifically designed to enhance the protection of children and to help parents locate their children when they are lost – it is not meant to be imposed as a type of censorship,” he said. “Installing the application on family members’ phones must be done through mutual consent, and by their own discretion.” He continued by advising parents to communicate with their children, and to emphasize and convince them on the advantages and importance of this service that ensures their safety.

Similarly, and to coincide with the return of the school year, the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Centre (CPC) urged parents to guide and raise the levels of awareness for their school-going children in regards to the rules and requirements of general safety when at schools and in school buses. The CPC recommends that parents protect their children by educating them about the dangers that they may face by deepening the concept of safety. Children should also be reminded to abide by public safety guidelines and be made aware of the consequences that follow negative behaviors.

Major Dr. Mohammed Khalifa Al Ali, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Centre, emphasized the need to strengthen preventative measures to protect children by spreading traffic awareness among students, especially when they gather near the street to wait for school buses. Noting that such gatherings pose threats to their safety, he said: “Be careful when boarding or disembarking from buses, don’t rush and push or pull each other, because you may fall down. Do not chase or grab on to moving buses, as this could lead to a run-over accident.”

He pointed to the family’s social role in educating children about public safety and the laws and regulations of traffic in manners that are commensurate with their age and maturity levels.  He recommended that families provide guidance about safe passage; where to stand on sidewalks; how to ensure that the street is empty by looking in both directions before crossing the street; cross the road in a straight line and move moderately quickly; and to avoid crossing in unsafe places, such as in front of or between vehicles, on side roads, or in hidden areas. He also said to abide by the rules when riding in the car, to always wear a seat belt, and to not tamper with or inconvenience the driver or others within the car.

Asian Camel Keeper Dies by Lightning in Al Ain

An Asian “camel keeper” died Friday evening after being struck by lightning, in Ghashabah area in Al Ain, while using the phone.

Colonel Mohammed Al Ameri, Head of the Emergency and Public Safety Department at the Abu Dhabi Police stated that the department received a report about a person who was struck by lightning. The ambulance and first responder vehicles were mobilized immediately. The victim was announced dead on site. The lightning also caused the death of 6 camels which were with the deceased.

Al Ameri advised the public to take maximum measures of protection against lightning. He urged them to follow up the weather forecast, and watch the weather to be able to spot any indications of storms; such as the gathering of dark clouds, hearing distant thunder, or seeing lightning in the distance.

He said in case of a thunderstorm, if a person is near the house or the car, they should go inside as fast as possible, or go inside the nearest building. He also urged the public to avoid standing or sitting next to trees or in open spaces. Col. Al Ameri also pointed to the importance of installing lightning rods on top of buildings and vehicles.

Al Ameri stressed the importance of avoiding telephone and power poles while using the phone, and avoid standing on high ground, or near metals. He called upon the farm owners to ensure the workers are following the protection and safety guidelines, and educate them against using mobile phones during thunderstorms to avoid being hit by lightning.
