VF Corporation Announces New Science-Based Targets to Accelerate Social and Environmental Responsibility Programs

New goals are part of the latest Made for Change Sustainability & Responsibility Report

DENVER-Sunday 8 December 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- VF Corporation (NYSE: VFC), one of the world’s largest apparel, footwear and accessories companies, today published the latest iteration of its Made for Change Sustainability & Responsibility report, including the announcement of industry-leading science-based targets (SBTs) and a bold vision for sustainable materials.

VF’s Made for Change report details the company’s aspirations for advancing environmental and social improvements across its business, portfolio of brands, global supply chain and communities worldwide. The report also highlights achievements from the last reporting year, which was 2018.

“Our workforce of 50,000 performance-driven people share a commitment to be more than just an apparel and footwear company. We strive to be a purpose-led enterprise that leverages the strength of our business to deliver positive impacts for people and the planet we share,” said Steve Rendle, VF’s Chairman, President and CEO. “We're proud of our progress but know there is so much more we can do. Our Made for Change strategy outlines our forward-looking priorities and provides us with a renewed focus to push ourselves harder and farther as we address some of our industry’s most challenging issues.”

VF’s Made for Change strategy focuses on three areas:

    Circular Business Models: The commercialization of circular business models to reduce VF’s environmental impact while creating new growth opportunities;
    Scale for Good: Leveraging VF’s global scale and influence to drive impact reduction across the business and broader industry; and,
    Movement Makers: Enabling VF and its brands to serve as a catalyst for powering movements of sustainable and active lifestyles for the betterment of people and our planet.

Made for Change Report Highlights

As outlined in the report, and in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, VF has made measurable progress against its targets. Highlights include:

    50 percent of VF’s distribution centers around the world are zero-waste facilities;
    16 of VF’s owned buildings are LEED certified;
    The launch of a bold sustainable materials vision focusing on three key concepts: regenerative, responsibly sourced renewable, and recycled materials; and,
    The improvement of worker livelihoods in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, the Dominican Republic, Vietnam, China, Kenya and Lesotho through VF’s Worker and Community Development (WCD) Program.

VF’s Science-Based Targets Approved by the Science Based Targets initiative

VF’s new science-based targets (SBTs) are among the most ambitious in the industry and are aligned with the ideology of using its global scale for good. SBTs are greenhouse gas emission reduction targets that are in line with meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement.

“VF is the largest company in the textiles, apparel, and luxury goods sector to set a 1.5-degree target for its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, and a well-below 2-degree target for its product-related Scope 3 emissions,” stated Ben Peel, Consultant, the Carbon Trust.

VF underwent an intensive, two-year long collaborative process to develop its new SBTs. The company partnered with global consultancy, the Carbon Trust, to model data across its owned and operated facilities as well as its entire operations from farm to retail store; and engaged deeply with its entire value chain. Primary data was gathered from VF’s 1,400 owned facilities, distribution centers and global logistics as well as more than 100 Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers, strengthening its ability to identify and implement reduction strategies.

VF’s science-based carbon emissions targets include:

    An absolute reduction of Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions 55 percent by 2030, from a 2017 baseline year; and,
    An absolute reduction of Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions 30 percent by 2030, from a 2017 baseline year focusing on farm-to-retail materials, sourcing operations and logistics.

The Science Based Targets initiative champions science-based target setting as a powerful way of boosting companies’ competitive advantage in the transition to the low-carbon economy. It is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments.

“This is the most comprehensive strategic advice we have delivered to an organization on how it can achieve its SBTs across its own operations and its value chain,” said Tom Delay, Chief Executive, the Carbon Trust. “This work sends a strong signal to the apparel sector about the degree of transformation needed to truly address emissions across global supply and distribution chains and multiple brands. The collaborative development process and focus on influencing others is what true corporate leadership looks like. We are excited to see VF achieve its ambitious goals.”

A New Vision for Sustainable Materials

Also announced today, VF’s new sustainable materials vision is key to achieving its SBTs. Extraction, production and manufacturing of raw materials account for the largest portion of VF’s carbon emissions globally. The innovative vision establishes a clear path for reduction through yet another bold commitment:

By 2030, VF commits that 100 percent of its top nine materials, which account for approximately 90 percent of its materials-related carbon emissions, will originate from regenerative, responsibly sourced renewable, or recycled sources.

Using tools such as the Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s Materials Sustainability Index and Life Cycle Analysis methodologies, VF is assessing its materials choices within these three areas to identify the greatest opportunities for environmental impact reduction, and to understand how accelerating against these choices will contribute to achieving its science-based targets.

O-RAN Alliance Releases First Software Code

• This first software release represents a consolidated step towards O-RAN-compliant Radio Access Network Commercialization

• It covers initial functionality of the O-RAN unique Near Real-Time RAN Intelligent Controller, the O1 interface and the protocol stack

• With more than 1 million lines of code, the “Amber” release is the result of contributions of over 60 developers from more than 10 companies

BONN, Germany-Friday 6 December 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Today, the O-RAN Alliance, working with the Linux Foundation, announced the O-RAN Software Community's first software code release, “Amber”.

The goal of the O-RAN Software Community is to advance opening the Radio Access Network (RAN) with a focus on the open interfaces, followed by implementations that leverage new capabilities enabled by the O-RAN specifications.

The Amber release includes initial contributions across 11 software projects. Key highlights include:

    The demonstration of the Operation and Maintenance O1 interface, including multi-vendor radio support.
    The initial release of the O-RAN unique Near Real-Time RAN Intelligent Controller. The Near-RT RIC aims at increasing network performance. It utilizes closed loop (~10ms) measurements to optimize load, energy consumption or other parameters across multiple radios. The O-RAN solution benefits from open access to local RAN data and leverages the O-RAN open architecture, including the E2 and O1 interfaces.
    3 initial Near-RT RIC microservices (X-APPs) on network admission control, network KPI monitoring and KPI measurement.
    An initial RAN protocol stack from 4G LTE with extendable framework towards 5G standalone mode that leverages the multi-vendor O-RAN architecture with the open fronthaul interface and the F1 interface.

The Amber Release is available at the O-RAN Software Community wiki pages.

The O-RAN Software Community plans to continue rapid development of O-RAN compliant software, following the Linux Foundation 6 months release cycle.

“The first release of the O-RAN Software Community exemplifies the progress we've made as an industry, and AT&T is proud to be a member and active contributor of this effort," said Andre Fuetsch, Chairman of the O-RAN Alliance, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of AT&T. “Together, we’re driving forward open networking, software and virtualization in global wireless networks, which is critical as we shift to a 5G world.”

"We are really pleased to deliver the first release of the O-RAN Software Community with key elements in both repositories in such a short period of time," said Chih-Lin I, Co-chair of O-RAN Technical Steering Committee (TSC), Chief Scientist of China Mobile. "The Amber Release provides a good framework for the non-realtime RIC and the near-realtime RIC under Apache 2.0, as well as the O-CU and the O-DU under the FRAND-based O-RAN Software License. It demonstrates the value of close alignment between the specification work and the corresponding open source software development.”

“The TOC is proud of all the contributors who have worked hard to bring together the first release of software for an open and intelligent RAN in such a short time,” said John Murray, co-chair of the O-RAN Software Community Technical Oversight Committee and AVP advanced technologies, AT&T. “It is an exciting and evolving domain that is at the front of technology changing our world. The first release is the start of the project and we expect the contributions and functionality to continue as we grow the community of contributors and deliver additional releases in the future.”

“At Nokia we are strong proponents of O-RAN’s core principles of intelligence and openness and believe it will motivate collaboration and drive innovative new services in the industry,” said Michael Clever, Head of Cloud RAN Solutions at Nokia. “We are pleased to be contributing to the Near-RT RIC software in the O-RAN Amber Release. This and future contributions will help prove out the Near-RT RIC and pave the way for wider adoption.”

“Radisys is a champion of O-RAN Alliance and our open strategy has been a guiding beacon for us to help foster the open RAN ecosystem,” said Neeraj Patel, SVP and GM, MobilityEngine Business Unit, Radisys. “We have been working with the O-RAN Alliance and Linux Foundation to bring an open O-DU and O-CU protocol stack as part of the Amber Release. Radisys will continue to play an active role both as an enabler and integrator to fast track the operationalization and commercialization of a multi-vendor ecosystem for 5G RAN.”

“We are pleased to see the O-RAN Software Community issue its first software release, especially in such a short time since forming the project,” said Arpit Joshipura, general manager, Networking, Edge and IoT, the Linux Foundation. “The speed in which this collaboration came together represents a strong commitment across the open source networking ecosystem towards the harmonization of both open source and open standards, as well as cross-stack integration.”

PCI Security Standards Council Publishes New Standard for Contactless Payments

—PCI Contactless Payments on COTS (CPoC™) Standard Provides Security and Test Requirements for Solutions that Enable Contactless Payment Acceptance on Merchant Mobile Devices Using NFC—

WAKEFIELD, Mass.-Saturday 7 December 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Today the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) published a new data security standard for solutions that enable merchants to accept contactless payments using a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) mobile device (e.g., smartphone or tablet) with near-field communication (NFC). Using the PCI Contactless Payments on COTS (CPoC™) Standard and supporting validation program, vendors can provide merchants with contactless acceptance solutions that have been developed and lab-tested to protect payment data.

“Providing the payments industry with standards and resources that support secure payment acceptance in new and emerging card and card-rooted payment channels is a key focus for the Council,” said PCI SSC Standards Officer Emma Sutcliffe. “The PCI CPoC Standard is the second standard released by the Council to address mobile contactless acceptance. Specifically, the PCI CPoC Standard provides security and test requirements for solutions that enable contactless payment acceptance on a merchant COTS device using an embedded NFC reader.”

“Contactless, or tap and go, payment adoption is on the rise globally, and merchants want affordable, flexible and safe options for contactless payment acceptance that allow them to best serve their customers. In addition to PCI Software-based PIN Entry on COTS (SPoC) Solutions that enable contactless payment acceptance with a dongle attached to the mobile COTS device, the PCI CPoC Standard and Program now provide merchants the option to use validated solutions that require no additional hardware to accept contactless transactions,” said PCI SSC Senior Vice President Troy Leach.

The PCI CPoC Standard includes security requirements for vendors on how to protect payment data in CPoC Solutions and test requirements for laboratories (labs) to evaluate these solutions through the supporting validation program. Validated CPoC Solutions are listed on the PCI SSC website as a resource for merchants and acquirers. Program details are outlined in the CPoC Program Guide, which is available now on the PCI SSC website.

The primary elements of a CPoC Solution include: a COTS device with an embedded NFC interface to read the payment card or payment device; a validated payment acceptance software application that runs on the merchant COTS device initiating a contactless transaction; and back-end systems that are independent from the COTS device and support monitoring, integrity checks and payment processing. Software-based PIN entry is not permitted in a CPoC Solution.

Through a combination of the security controls built into the merchant application and ongoing monitoring and integrity checks performed by the back-end systems, merchants and consumers can have confidence in the security of the CPoC Solution and the contactless transaction.

“Developed with the input of the global payments industry via the requests for comments (RFC) process, the CPoC Standard is a continuation of the Council’s efforts to provide merchants with secure mobile payment acceptance options they can trust to support their customers and protect the integrity and confidentiality of their payment data,” added Leach.

The PCI CPoC Standard and Program documents are available on the PCI SSC website.
