Arthur D. Little Publishes Bridge over troubled waters – Latest Edition of Prism Magazine

LONDON - Wednesday, 05. April 2023 AETOSWire Print

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Arthur D. Little (ADL) has published Bridge over troubled waters – the latest edition of its innovation magazine PRISM. The first edition of 2023 looks beyond today’s negative headlines, exploring how businesses and their leaders are building for the future, with a new, cautious confidence.

The magazine features seven key articles:

Embracing uncertainty, driving growth - There is no shortage of research into the current state of the world economy, but what do leading CEOs actually think about market conditions, and what are their strategies for the future? Based on in-depth research with CEOs of $1bn+ companies, our lead article paints a positive picture around optimism, innovation and growth.

Navigating the sustainability journey - Achieving sustainability requires transformational change. However, uncertainties around customer demand, regulation and technology maturity mean that effective decision-making is hard. This article explains why adopting an updated version of scenario planning can identify the ‘no regret’ decisions that organizations need to take, both now and in the future.

How data sharing is essential to deliver industry-wide transformation - Across industries, collaboration is crucial to meeting the twin needs of sustainability and customer-centricity. Data is the fuel to power this collaboration, but how can companies effectively harness and share it across their ecosystems? Using lessons from the energy sector, this article outlines new approaches that underpin successful transformation.

How to build a unicorn in the post-pandemic inflationary world - The abrupt slowdown in start-up funding demonstrates that market conditions have fundamentally changed. Building future unicorns requires a new approach, focused on the bottom-line, rather than chasing unprofitable growth. Based on experience and conversations with start-ups and their backers, this article sets out the new formula for creating unicorns.

Take off or trough? – In today's world companies cannot afford to ignore potentially disruptive technology, but predicting how and when technologies will accelerate to impact the mainstream remains an issue. This article explains how new approaches around expert crowdsourcing and design fiction can allow companies to make the right investment decisions, at the right time.

Combining strength and agility - Companies in complex, highly specialized and capital intensive sectors such as aerospace & defense, and energy face particular challenges in delivering breakthrough innovation. This article sets out a framework based on four key factors that combines agility and strength to drive successful breakthrough outcomes.

CEO interview: Andreas Matthä, CEO, ÖBB - ÖBB is an Austrian railway mobility and logistics service provider which transported 320+ million passengers and over 94 million tonnes of goods during 2021. We interview its CEO, Andreas Matthä, who explains how the company’s clear purpose guides its strategic decision-making.

Ignacio García Alves, Global Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Arthur D. Little, comments: “Across the world, we are seeing a growing confidence amongst businesses and their leaders. This issue of PRISM provides insight into this trend, focusing on how technology and business, working together with governments and communities, have the ability to help the world bridge over today’s troubled waters..”

Milestone Systems delivers record-high net revenue

Video software firm Milestone Systems delivered double-digit growth in 2022, according to the Danish company’s newly released Annual Report.

The 25-year-old Copenhagen-headquartered technology company recorded an all-time high annual net revenue of 1.5 billion Danish kroner (AED 800 million), a 30% increase compared to 2021. Milestone reported a pre-tax profit of 11 million DKK in 2022. The company aims to more than double its 2021 revenue by 2026 as part of an ambitious growth strategy.

A key part of Milestone’s strategy is responsible technology. Last year, the company committed to the United Nations’ Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Milestone will introduce further initiatives addressing how it develops technology and how its products are sold and used.

Thomas Jensen, Chief Executive Officer of Milestone Systems, said, “It took 21 years to reach the first billion kroner in net revenue, but over just the last three years, we added half a billion kroner to our net revenue. That is a testament to our people's hard work, engagement, and innovation.”

“2022 was a challenging year during which both Milestone and its customers had to learn to live with Covid-19 and manoeuvre the supply-chain challenges and component shortages brought on by the aftermath of the pandemic. The outbreak of war on European soil continued to have tragic consequences for the people involved. Along with other companies, we exited Russia as a result of the invasion of Ukraine. Despite inflation and energy price hikes last year, we grew our business by 30%. Through the strength of our network of technology partners, distributors, and resellers, we navigated a year which was almost a perfect storm.”

Reflecting on Milestone’s growth ambitions, Thomas Jensen added, “As we enter our 25th anniversary year, we are in a strong position to follow our strategic direction to transform our industry by setting the standard for video technology in and beyond security, such as video-enabled solutions for hospitals. We also see many opportunities with the growth of artificial intelligence, which we believe will greatly expand the possibilities of data-driven video technology.”

Growth plans

Last year, Milestone added almost 200 people to its global team, which is based across 25 locations. Lars Larsen, the chief financial officer of Milestone Systems, said, “We continue to invest, grow, and hire for the future. Our investments in 2022 have put us in a strong position to continue our growth journey together with our partners in 2023.”

Other highlights from the year included announcing a new cloud solution, Milestone Kite powered by Arcules. Kite is a simple, secure, and scalable video security-as-a-service (VSaaS) solution. The cloud-based solution is primarily designed for small- to medium-sized businesses and larger organisations with multiple satellite and remote locations.

The company also announced that it would explore new opportunities for XProtect both in and beyond the traditional security market. The software has been deployed in over 500,000 installations worldwide and is used by various end users, from airports to hospitals to tourist attractions.

Highlights in FY 2022

Net revenue: 1.48 billion DKK

Pre-tax profit: 11 million DKK

Employees: 1,281

Subsidiaries: 25

100 million DKK investment in development projects

Philip Morris International Releases Integrated Report 2022

LAUSANNE, Switzerland - Wednesday, 05. April 2023 AETOSWire Print

Report communicates PMI’s progress toward becoming a majority smoke-free company as the company continues to transform for good.

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI) (NYSE: PM) released its fourth annual Integrated Report today. Informed by a formal sustainability materiality assessment, the report aims to provide an objective description of the company’s business model, governance and management, strategy, and performance.

“Despite its many tests, 2022 was a remarkable year that brought our employees closer and saw us make measurable strides toward achieving our purpose,” said Jacek Olczak, Chief Executive Officer of PMI. “We are progressing toward our 2025 aspiration of becoming a majority smoke-free company and ultimately phase out cigarettes. While a transformation of this magnitude and complexity cannot be achieved overnight, we are committed to making it happen as fast as possible. It is through constructive engagement that we will accelerate the pace of meaningful and impactful change and complete our transformation for good.”

PMI’s latest Integrated Report communicates the progress the company is making towards achieving its purpose—the company’s statement of purpose articulates PMI’s aim to deliver a smoke-free future by focusing its resources on developing, scientifically substantiating, and responsibly commercializing smoke-free products that are less harmful than smoking, with the aim of completely replacing cigarettes as soon as possible and to evolve in the longer term into a broader lifestyle, consumer wellness, and healthcare company.

Building on its ESG framework, PMI developed eight strategies targeting the company’s most pressing areas of impact. To accompany these eight strategies, PMI established 11 goals, which form the basis of its 2025 Roadmap, and 19 key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure progress via its Sustainability Index. Each KPI is also aligned with one of two drivers: product sustainability (11 KPIs) or operational sustainability (8 KPIs).

“Non-financial information is increasingly being used by external stakeholders to assess and compare a company’s performance to others, including the financial community in their analyses and investment decisions. It is key to the integrity of PMI’s reporting that the information and data that we publicly disclose accurately reflect our company’s progress, following clear calculation methods,” explained Emmanuel Babeau, Chief Financial Officer of PMI.

Last year, PMI also published its first ESG KPI Protocol, which includes the definition, methodology, and scope of each of the Sustainability Index’s KPIs to provide measurable, verifiable, consistent, and accurate reporting on progress. In conjunction with its latest Integrated Report, the company is also publishing an updated Protocol that notably accounts for efforts undertaken during 2022 to make these KPIs even more robust.

Progress against PMI’s sustainability aspirations continued mostly apace in 2022 as it sought to tackle the impacts of both its products (what it produces) and its operations (how it produces).

On the social side of its product impact, the company continued to transform and deliver on its purpose; further, it continued implementation of youth access prevention programs in its direct and indirect retail channels. Mindful of the importance of reducing post-consumer waste, it made progress in implementing take-back programs for its smoke-free devices and consumables and increased its electronic device repair capabilities.

Product impact

Social

24.9 million: Estimated total adult users of PMI’s smoke-free products (2021: 21.7 m)1

32.1%: Of net revenues derived from smoke-free products (2021: 29.5%)2

73: Markets where PMI smoke-free products are available for sale, of which 42% are in low- and middle-income countries (2021: 71, 42%)3

USD 10.7 billion: Cumulative investment behind smoke-free products since 2008 (2021: USD 9.2 billion)4

91%: Of total shipment volume covered by youth access prevention programs in indirect retail channels (2021: 91%)5

USD 0.3 billion: Annual net revenue from wellness and healthcare products (2021: USD 0.1 billion)

Environmental

86%: Recycling rate of IQOS devices returned to centralized recycling hubs (weighted-average percentage of each device that is recycled) (2021: 86%)6

68%: Of shipment volume covered by markets with anti-littering programs in place for combustible cigarettes

8.5%: Of shipment volume covered by markets with smoke-free consumables take-back programs7

On the social side of PMI’s operations, the company expanded access to structured lifelong learning offers among PMI employees, published a strengthened commitment to human rights, and completed its sixth and seventh human rights impact assessments, in Brazil and Malaysia. On the environmental side, it continued decarbonizing its direct operations, and its science-based targets were validated for net zero GHG emissions across its value chain by 2040. In conjunction with the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 15) in December 2022, the company announced new long-term biodiversity and water ambitions and strategies, aligned with the post-2020 biodiversity framework adopted by parties to the convention.

Operational impact

Social

40.7% Of management positions held by women, exceeding our 2022 target of 40% (2021: 39.7%)

7 Human rights impact assessments conducted since 2018 in highest-risk countries (2021: 5)

Environmental

55% Proportion of tobacco purchased at no risk of net deforestation of managed natural forest and no conversion of natural ecosystems (2021: 37%)

Triple A Score from CDP for climate, forest, and water security for the third consecutive year

As a strong complement to the content and data included in PMI’s 2022 Integrated Report, the company has developed 12 case studies and market stories that showcase impact and highlight how PMI affiliates worldwide drive sustainability. All case studies and market stories are available online in a dedicated section of pmi.com/sustainability.

“We recognize the essential need to continue building legitimacy and trust among our stakeholders, who are fundamental to our company’s purpose and can accelerate the pace at which we achieve it,” said Jennifer Motles, Chief Sustainability Officer at PMI. “Our latest Integrated Report aims to address their demands for more detailed and comparable information on our risks and performance. As we continue to learn, transform, and discover better ways to develop solutions that have a meaningful impact, we hope our transparency and willingness to engage will spark dialogue with those who can help accelerate our pace of change.”

Please visit pmi.com/sustainability to learn more about sustainability at PMI and read the PMI Integrated Report 2022.

The preparation of PMI’s Integrated Report 2022 considers guidance of international standards and frameworks, including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the UN Global Compact (UNGC), the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the IFRS Foundation—including use of its SASB Standards, Integrated Thinking Principles, and Integrated Reporting Framework—and some of the recommendations from the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

Philip Morris International: Delivering a Smoke-Free Future

Philip Morris International (PMI) is a leading international tobacco company working to deliver a smoke-free future and evolving its portfolio for the long term to include products outside of the tobacco and nicotine sector. The company’s current product portfolio primarily consists of cigarettes and smoke-free products. Since 2008, PMI has invested more than USD 10.5 billion to develop, scientifically substantiate and commercialize innovative smoke-free products for adults who would otherwise continue to smoke, with the goal of completely ending the sale of cigarettes. This includes the building of world-class scientific assessment capabilities, notably in the areas of pre-clinical systems toxicology, clinical and behavioral research, as well as post-market studies. In November 2022, PMI acquired Swedish Match – a leader in oral nicotine delivery – creating a global smoke-free champion led by the companies’ IQOS and ZYN brands. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized versions of PMI’s IQOS Platform 1 devices and consumables and Swedish Match’s General snus as Modified Risk Tobacco Products (MRTPs). As of December 31, 2022, PMI's smoke-free products were available for sale in 73 markets, and PMI estimates that approximately 17.8 million adults around the world had already switched to IQOS and stopped smoking. Smoke-free products accounted for approximately 32% of PMI’s total full-year 2022 net revenues. With a strong foundation and significant expertise in life sciences, PMI announced in February 2021 its ambition to expand into wellness and healthcare areas and, through its Vectura Fertin Pharma subsidiary, aims to enhance life through the delivery of seamless health experiences. Carbios Licensing Documentation Ready for Worldwide Industrial and Commercial Deployment of Its PET Biorecycling Technology

Excellent outputs from the demonstration unit and advanced engineering study for the reference unit allow the transfer of Carbios’ PET biorecycling technology to potential licensees

Technical Information Summary, Process Design Package and Process Book make up the engineering documentation deliverables for the design and construction of Licensed Plants

Completion of the Technical Information Summary marks the start of international prospection

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Regulatory News:

Carbios (Euronext Growth Paris: ALCRB) (Paris:ALCRB), a pioneer in the development and industrialization of biological technologies to reinvent the life cycle of plastics and textiles, is geared up for the global commercialization of its PET biorecycling technology. The successful ongoing operations in its demonstration unit in Clermont-Ferrand and the advanced engineering study for its first commercial plant (due to be commissionned in 2025) define the engineering basis and operational guidelines for units to be operated under license agreements. From technology promotion with the Technical Information Summary to project development with a specific Process Design Package and Process Book, future Carbios licensees will be handed all necessary process documentation to reliably engineer, procure, construct and operate their PET biorecycling plants under stringent HSE1 standards and with high product quality.

PET producers and chemical companies are natural potential customers for a technology that allows a true circularity for PET with alternative feedstock to petro-sourced monomers, and that is fully compatible with existing polymerization plants. By providing value to all possible sources of PET feedstock including complex plastic packaging and textile waste, Carbios also aims to reach out to other players in the value chain such as waste management companies and public entities. Carbios’ technology also provides a solution to brand owners in order to meet growing regulatory requirements as well as their own ambitious sustainability objectives for the inclusion of r-PET in their products and packaging.

“As the leading company in the industrialization of biorecyling technology, Carbios is keen to bring its solution for plastic and textile circularity at scale to partners around the world,” commented Stéphane Ferreira, Chief Business Officer of Carbios. “Wherever there is plastic use, there is a need for eco-responsible recycling. At Carbios, we are ready to deploy our biorecycling technology and contribute concretely to the circular economy of plastic.”

The new industrial milestone complements the collaborations with brand owners within Carbios’ two consortiums, and the exclusive long-term partnership with Novozymes, the world leader in enzyme production, which ensures the supply of enzymes to the Carbios reference unit and future licensed plants.

“With the engineering documentation now made available, we have reached a new industrial milestone on schedule in the deployment of our PET biorecycling technology,” said Lionel Arras, Industrial Development Director of Carbios.

“Putting this documentation together is a significant achievement and I thank all our engineering teams from our demonstration and reference units for their hard work,” added Frédéric Alarcon, Licensing Manager of Carbios.

About Carbios

Established in 2011 by Truffle Capital, Carbios is a green chemistry company, developing biological and innovative processes. Through its unique approach of combining enzymes and plastics, Carbios aims to address new consumer expectations and the challenges of a broad ecological transition by taking up a major challenge of our time: plastic and textile pollution. Carbios deconstructs any type of PET (the dominant polymer in bottles, trays, textiles made of polyester) into its basic components which can then be reused to produce new PET plastics with equivalent quality to virgin ones. This PET innovation, the first of its kind in the world, was recently recognized in a scientific paper published on the front cover of the prestigious journal Nature. Carbios successfully started up its demonstration plant in Clermont-Ferrand in 2021. It has now taken another key step towards the industrialization of its process with the construction of a first-of-a-kind unit in partnership with Indorama Ventures.

In 2017, Carbios and L’Oréal co-founded a consortium to contribute to the industrialization of its proprietary recycling technology. Committed to developing innovative solutions for sustainable development, Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo and Suntory Beverage & Food Europe joined this consortium in April 2019. In 2022, Carbios signed an agreement with On, Patagonia, PUMA, and Salomon, to develop solutions promoting the recyclability and circularity of their products. PVH Corp. joined this consortium in January 2023.

The Company has also developed an enzymatic biodegradation technology for PLA-based (a bio sourced polymer) single-use plastics. This technology can create a new generation of plastics that are 100% compostable in domestic conditions, integrating enzymes at the heart of the plastic product.
