AIT Worldwide Logistics acquires European life sciences specialist Mach II Shipping Ltd

 ITASCA, Ill. -

Deal includes global partner network, highly accredited locations in Netherlands, United Kingdom

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- AIT Worldwide Logistics, a global supply chain solutions leader, has acquired Mach II Shipping Ltd, a U.K.-based freight forwarder specializing in worldwide distribution of pharmaceuticals and related products. The deal includes a subsidiary in the Netherlands in addition to a global network of life sciences partners.

According to AIT’s Executive Vice President, Life Sciences, Chris Amberg, the acquired company (commonly known as Mach 2 or Pharmafreight) has earned a reputation for extremely high-quality shipping solutions in the demanding life sciences industry, including transportation programs for clinical trials, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), pharmaceutical machinery, and finished products.

“In addition to temperature-controlled air freight, Mach 2 provides outstanding dedicated road service for high-value life sciences moves throughout Europe with a managed fleet of temperature-controlled vehicles operated by Good Distribution Practices-trained independent contractors,” Amberg said. “Additionally, their value-added services include in-house customs clearance and a temperature-controlled warehouse in Ashford, Middlesex, near London Heathrow Airport.”

Services at the Ashford location are mirrored by a second office in the Netherlands, opened in 2019 as a response to the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union. Customers requiring a post-Brexit alternative to working in the U.K. receive the same top-quality standard of service from the Nieuw-Vennep office, located just minutes away from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, while avoiding Brexit-related customs or regulatory challenges. The Netherlands facility features an ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezer farm, safely and securely storing oncology products at below -60°C.

Mach 2’s global Pharmafreight partner network is also included as part of the acquisition. Formed in 2000, the network has grown over the past two decades under the leadership of Mach 2 Shipping Commercial Director, Andy Hughes. As a result of careful recruitment and vetting, Pharmafreight is a first-rate collective of audited, approved independent freight forwarders operating under Good Distribution Practices in 30 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America.

In addition to promoting best practices for total quality across the network, Pharmafreight ensures consistent quality with international partner training (including GDP training) and a global sales call program to boost cooperation between network partners.

“Our teammates across Mach 2 and Pharmafreight are eagerly continuing to provide stable, high-quality service for our customers as we prepare to integrate fully with AIT in 2024,” Hughes said. “This acquisition is providing a phenomenal opportunity to enhance our solutions for customers as we tap into AIT’s vast worldwide network.”

“I’m delighted to welcome Mach 2 and Pharmafreight teammates to the company,” said AIT’s President and Chief Operating Officer, Keith Tholan. “Their well-tenured expertise provides an instant boost to our world-class Life Sciences Division, and we look forward to elevating cold chain service for our customers, especially in Europe.”

In addition to being Authorized Economic Operator and Good Distribution Practices certified, the Mach 2 United Kingdom office is one of just 20 forwarders with Wholesale Distribution Authorization (WDA) granted from the U.K.’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Likewise, the Netherlands location is one of only 15 forwarders to earn API storage registration; it has also obtained Japanese Foreign Manufacturer Accreditation, and the facility will soon hold its own Dutch WDA and Manufacturers Import Authorization (MIA) license.

Terms of AIT’s acquisition of Mach II Shipping Ltd have not been disclosed.

11 Winners Recognised at Zayed Sustainability Prize Awards Ceremony held during COP28 UAE

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, 02. December 2023

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, today awarded the winners of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, the UAE’s pioneering global award in sustainability and humanitarianism, during a ceremony held at COP28 UAE in Expo City Dubai.

The Ceremony was attended by numerous heads of delegations participating in COP28, ministers, senior government officials, and Prize winners and finalists.

His Highness congratulated the winners, praising their efforts in promoting sustainability and encouraging them to continue their important contributions in this field. His Highness emphasised that the UAE is steadfast in building upon its established legacy in sustainability, a foundation laid by the country’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. In this regard, His Highness highlighted the significant role of the Zayed Sustainability Prize in advancing sustainable development, serving humanity, and empowering innovators, entrepreneurs, and youth to actively contribute towards making a positive difference for our planet.

The Prize honours the legacy of UAE’s founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, by rewarding small and medium enterprises, nonprofit organisations, and high schools that are addressing health, food, energy, water and climate-related challenges. For over 15 years, through its 106 previous winners, the Prize has transformed the lives of 384 million people worldwide.

The Prize’s eleven winners for the current cycle were elected in September by a distinguished panel of Jury members, who rigorously evaluated each submission for its contribution and commitment to delivering impactful, innovative, and inspiring solutions across the six categories of Health, Food, Energy, Water, Climate Action and Global High Schools.

To strengthen its commitment to promoting sustainable and humanitarian development, the Zayed Sustainability Prize will be increasing its endowment, from US $3.6M to US $5.9M, effective immediately.

H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Director General of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, and COP28 President, said: “Today, the UAE reaffirms its dedication to combat climate change and empower vulnerable communities as we award US $1 million to each of our distinguished winners in Health, Food, Water, Energy and Climate Action, and US $150,000 to each Global High Schools winner. This substantial funding will help scale their innovative solutions and deliver transformational progress around the world, especially across the Global South.”

“As the Zayed Sustainability Prize’s 15th anniversary draws to a close, we reflect on the UAE's mission to drive inclusive sustainable development and climate action. The Prize not only honours Sheikh Zayed's legacy of social good but extends the reach of his vision on a global scale.”

With a larger fund, the Prize can broaden its support for innovative solutions that not only positively impact the environment but also improve the well-being and economic development of the world’s most climate-vulnerable communities.

In the new Climate Action category, Kelp Blue, a Namibian SME, won the Prize for its ambitious efforts to cultivate large-scale kelp forests in deep waters, contributing to the restoration of ocean biodiversity while capturing 100,000 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere annually. Additionally, their operations have generated job opportunities in coastal communities.

In the Health category, Indonesia’s doctorSHARE was awarded the Prize for its pioneering work in bringing healthcare access to hard-to-reach areas, notably with barge-mounted floating hospitals. Their impact is substantial, having treated over 160,000 patients.

In the Food category, Gaza Urban & Peri-urban Agricultural Platform (GUPAP) from Palestine, won for its contributions to supporting a more resilient agricultural sector in Gaza. The NPO facilitates access to locally produced food, providing job security to 200 women agriprenuers and benefitting more than 7,000 people.

In the Energy category, Ignite Power, an SME from Rwanda, was awarded the Prize for its transformative efforts to provide affordable electricity to last-mile communities across Sub-Saharan Africa. Their pay-as-you-go solar solutions provided electricity to 2.5 million people and prevented 600,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Beyond access to clean energy, Ignite Power has introduced solar powered irrigation solutions and generated 3,500 local jobs.

In the Water category, Eau et Vie, an NPO from France, won for its contributions to ensuring access to clean water in impoverished areas by installing taps in urban homes. They have increased water access for 52,000 people in 27 communities across 10 cities. Furthermore, they raised awareness of hygienic practices for 66,000 individuals and reduced the cost of water by 75%.

The Chair of the Jury and former President of the Republic of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, said: "This year's winners have demonstrated a remarkable wave of ingenuity in their solutions to address urgent global challenges. We have confidence that these winners will catalyse substantial and scalable change in communities worldwide, propelling us towards vital climate action objectives and forging a path to a sustainable future for all."

The Zayed Sustainability Prize also engages young people through its Global High Schools category and encourages youth to take an active role in supporting their communities and becoming future sustainability leaders. The Prize’s 47 Global High Schools winners have impacted the lives of over 55,186 students and 453,887 people in their wider communities.

The recipients of the Global High Schools awards are Colegio De Alto Rendimiento De La Libertad (Peru), representing The Americas; Gwani Ibrahim Dan Hajja Academy (Nigeria), representing Sub-Saharan Africa; International School (Morocco), representing the Middle East & North Africa; Northfleet Technology College (United Kingdom), representing Europe & Central Asia; KORT Education Complex (Pakistan), representing South Asia; and finally, Beijing High School No. 35 (China), representing East Asia & Pacific.

Dole Receives Grand Winner Award for Efforts that Support its Workforce and Well-being in Costa Rica

 CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Monday, 04. December 2023 AETOSWire Print

AmCham recognizes Dole Costa Rica with two Social Responsibility in Action Awards

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Dole plc (NYSE: DOLE), a global leader in the production and marketing of fresh fruit, announced today the company was again recognized for its outstanding corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts in Costa Rica.

In this 27th year of the most prestigious Social Responsibility awards in Costa Rica, 30 companies from various industries submitted a total of 45 projects that benefit sustainable development in Costa Rica. The American-Costa Rican Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) recognized Dole’s “Financial Education Program for Farm Employees” as the Grand Winner.

This marks the second consecutive year that the Company has achieved this milestone.

AmCham representatives discerned that the program is distinguished not only for its analysis, planning, and execution but also for the innovative approach and strong commitment towards Costa Rica’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program, which was nominated for the “Employees” category, won this group and was later considered the best overall effort in the event.

Launched in 2019, Dole’s comprehensive financial education program works to improve the lives of employees by providing the tools necessary to manage household finances, reduce indebtedness, and alleviate economic hardship for families.

Through an exhaustive 12-week process called “The Path to Prosperity,” participating employees receive expert guidance toward developing new beliefs and habits regarding consumption moderation and financial control. This aims to enable participants to: reduce debt, increase cash flow, grow assets, and enhance their financial well-being.

The program is adaptable to each participant’s specific needs and includes support groups, training sessions, application of tools, individual consultations, and follow-up through a virtual community. A core aspect of the program is that it is operationally sustainable with significant portion of the effort carried out by a team comprised of volunteers from within the Company who have contributed over 15,000 hours to the program.

The Financial Education Program for Farm Employees was initiated to help address the gaps identified through the Company’s measurement of multidimensional poverty among employees and their families; a methodology pioneered by Dole in the agriculture industry.

The Business Multidimensional Poverty Index (bMPI) seeks to measure poverty—not only from the traditional way of per capita income—but also by incorporating dimensions including health, education, housing, and employment. This allows organizations to identify gaps and focus social programs and efforts to address them.

Dole’s financial program is an excellent example of actions aligned with this goal. The project's impact is undeniable, with the closure of 63 gaps in the bMPI and a 7.34% improvement in the financial health index for 39% of the 275 graduates.

“Dole's leadership in CSR is a testament to our unwavering dedication to creating a positive impact on the communities we serve,” stated Sandra Lima, Senior Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility. “The Grand Winner award at the AmCham Social Responsibility in Action Awards stands as a powerful recognition of Dole's innovative and impactful approach to employee well-being and social empowerment.”

Pimicotinib (ABSK021) is currently in a global Phase III study in tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT)
Merck to receive an exclusive commercial license in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan with option for rest of world
Pimicotinib has been granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation by China NMPA and U.S. FDA and PRIME Designation by the EMA for treatment of TGCT

Not intended for UK-, US- or Canada-based media

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Merck, a leading science and technology company, today announced a license agreement with Abbisko Therapeutics Co. Ltd., Shanghai, China, for pimicotinib (ABSK021), which is currently being evaluated in a Phase III study for the treatment of tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT). TGCT is a benign tumor of the joints that can cause swelling, pain, stiffness, and limited mobility of the affected joints. Treatment options for this disease, which can seriously affect patients’ quality of life, are very limited. The agreement grants Merck a license to commercialize pimicotinib in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, with an option for rest of world.

“We have the opportunity through our partnership with Abbisko to deliver a first-in-class treatment for a critically underserved patient population in China and potentially beyond,” said Andrew Paterson, Chief Marketing Officer for the Healthcare business sector of Merck. “Pimicotinib provides an opportunity to address a significant unmet medical need and for us to expand our commercial footprint in oncology in China, the second-largest pharmaceutical market in the world.”

Pimicotinib is an orally administered, highly selective and potent small-molecule antagonist of colony stimulating factor-1 receptor (CSF-1R) currently being evaluated in a global Phase III clinical trial as a potential therapy for TGCT. No drugs are currently approved in China for the disease, and only one medicine has been approved in the U.S.

In a recent Phase Ib trial, pimicotinib demonstrated clinically meaningful and sustained antitumor activity, with an overall response rate at one-year follow-up of 87.5% (28/32, including 3 complete responses) among patients receiving the 50mg QD dose, as determined by the Independent Review Committee, based on Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors v1.1 (RECIST 1.1). The ongoing randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase III MANEUVER trial is evaluating the efficacy and safety of pimicotinib 50 mg QD in patients with unresectable TGCT.

“The collaboration with Merck is an important milestone in advancing the global commercialization process of pimicotinib, and provides a new model for the commercialization path of Abbisko’s pipeline in the future,” said Dr. Xu Yao-chang, Chairman of Abbisko Therapeutics. “We are pleased to collaborate with a leading multinational pharmaceutical company, jointly accelerating the global approval and commercialization pace of pimicotinib, and striving to bring new treatment options to patients as soon as possible.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Merck will receive an exclusive license to commercialize pimicotinib in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, with an exclusive commercialization option in the rest of the world. Abbisko will continue to develop pimicotinib. In addition, Merck has the option to co-develop pimicotinib in additional indications under certain conditions. Merck will provide Abbisko with an upfront payment of $70 million and upon exercising the option, will provide Abbisko an option fee. Abbisko will receive additional payments for the achievement of certain regulatory and commercial milestones as well as double-digit tiered royalties on net sales by Merck.

About Pimicotinib (ABSK021)

Pimicotinib (ABSK021), which was independently developed by Abbisko Therapeutics, is a novel, orally administered, highly selective and potent small-molecule inhibitor of CSF-1R. Pimicotinib has been granted breakthrough therapy designations (BTD) by China National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and priority medicine (PRIME) designation from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for the treatment of patients with TGCT that are not amenable to surgery.

A Phase Ia dose escalation study for pimicotinib has been completed in the U.S., and the global Phase III MANEUVER clinical trial of pimicotinib for the treatment of TGCT is underway in China, the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

In addition to TGCT, Abbisko Therapeutics is actively exploring the potential of pimicotinib in treating other indications including many types of solid tumors. Abbisko also has obtained approval from NMPA to conduct Phase II clinical studies in chronic graft-versus-host disease and advanced pancreatic cancer.
