ABB to Strengthen E-Mobility Portfolio With Acquisition of Chinese EV Charging Provider Chargedot

ZURICH, Switzerland-Monday 28 October 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- ABB is to acquire a majority stake of 67 percent in Shanghai Chargedot New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (“Chargedot”), a leading Chinese e-mobility solution provider. The transaction is expected to be completed in the coming months and ABB has the possibility to increase its stake further in the next three years.

Since its establishment in 2009, Shanghai-based Chargedot has made a significant contribution to the uptake of electric vehicles in China. The company supplies AC and DC charging stations, as well as the necessary software platform to a range of customers that includes EV manufacturers, EV charging network operators and real estate developers. It has approximately 185 employees and its other shareholders among others include Shanghai SAIC Anyo Charging Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of SAIC.

Chargedot is a natural fit for ABB, which as a global leader in sustainable transportation infrastructure, already offers solutions from grid distribution to charging points for cars and trucks, as well as for the electrification of ships, railways, trams, buses and cable cars. The acquisition will strengthen ABB’s relationship with leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers and broaden the company’s e-mobility portfolio with hardware and software developed specifically for local requirements. ABB Robotics is the leading supplier of robot units and software to the assembly lines of Chinese EV manufacturers.

“This investment is a further demonstration of ABB’s commitment to enabling sustainable mobility,” said Tarak Mehta, President of ABB's Electrification business. “With China forging ahead in the development of a comprehensive e-mobility ecosystem, this acquisition will give ABB a significant role in delivering growth, working closely with SAIC and other leading Chinese car manufacturers.”

“Chargedot was one of the first high-tech enterprises in China to focus on new energy vehicle charging solutions. By joining with ABB, we will be positioned strongly to make the next big leap forward,” said Mao Chunhua, CEO of Chargedot.

The outlook for the global e-mobility infrastructure market is growing. Grand View Research, Inc. forecasts the Asia Pacific region is expected to show the highest growth in this market. China already boasts the largest fleet of electric vehicles worldwide at 2 million, with consumers supported by a government-backed incentive scheme.

ABB has unrivalled expertise in delivering solutions for safe, smart and sustainable electrification. Its partnership with the ABB FIA Formula E Championship serves as a global platform to test and develop e-mobility-relevant electrification and digitalization technologies, pushing the boundaries of e-mobility for a noise and emission free future. There will be an ABB Formula E race taking place in Sanya, China, on March 21, 2020.

Key to achieving this vision, ABB’s comprehensive e-mobility portfolio spans EV charging technology and supporting energy distribution solutions. ABB has sold more than 11,000 DC fast-charging points across 76 countries worldwide.

Within China, ABB has been working with BYD and Daimler since 2016, supplying its DC Wallbox units for charging Denza electric vehicles. The company is also a supplier of DC fast charging solutions to electric vehicle manufacturers including NIO and to operators such as BP/ifuel 66.

ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a technology leader that is driving the digital transformation of industries. With a history of innovation spanning more than 130 years, ABB has four customer-focused, globally leading businesses: Electrification, Industrial Automation, Motion, and Robotics & Discrete Automation, supported by the ABB Ability™ digital platform. ABB’s Power Grids business will be divested to Hitachi in 2020. ABB operates in more than 100 countries with about 147,000 employees. www.abb.com

Fakih IVF sheds the light on Repeated Implantation Failure (RIF)

Failure could be due to various uterine, male or embryo factors

Dubai, United Arab Emirates-Monday 28 October 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

Multiple failed IVF trials can leave couples distressed and frustrated, standing in the way of achieving their dream of starting a family.

Termed as Repeated Implantation Failure (RIF), these failed trials refer to the unsuccessful attempt to implant an embryo on either side of the uterus. This failure of embryo implantation is a result of several factors including uterine, male or embryo factors or depending on any specific type of IVF protocol.

Dr Michael Fakih, Medical Director of Fakih IVF said, “This can be a trying phase in the lives of families eagerly awaiting to welcome their child into this world. We understand this could be extremely exhausting for them and hence are always trying to ensure to provide the best of services by our IVF treatment experts.”

Dr. Limia Ibrahim, Specialist Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility - IVF /OB-GYN at Fakih IVF said, “Women trying to conceive after the age of 35, or with an increased body weight or BMI are at a higher risk of experiencing RIF.” Some of the other factors causing the failure include smoking, increases stress levels, certain immunological factors, uterine pathologies and sperm abnormalities.

In one of Dr. Ibrahim’s recent cases a 35-year-old patient battling infertility due to male factors for approximately 3 years sought her expertise. The patient reported a case of repeated implantation failure diagnosed after evaluation and two IVF trials. Chromosomally abnormal embryos were suspected as a cause for the RIF after which the patient had her genetic testing PGD done on the third trial, after which normal embryos were transferred and the couple had a successful pregnancy.

Recurrent Implantation Failure is a complex problem with a wide variety of causes and mechanisms as well as treatment options. The recommendations for women with RIF vary depending on the source of their problem that include pre-implantation genetic screening (PGS), evaluation of endometrial receptivity, personalized medicine. etc

Currently there is not just one treatment option, but many depending on the etiology of the problem.

Fakih IVF Fertility Center is one of the leading Infertility, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Genetics and IVF centers in the GCC region with centers in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Dubai. With several state-of-the-art technologies, the center is continually advancing in the field of reproductive medicine across the region.

Stars of Science Unveils Top Four Contestants for Season 11

Biomedical innovations lead in the latest Stars of Science instalment

Doha, Qatar-Sunday 27 October 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

In a bid to prove that their products were ready for user testing, the show’s five remaining contestants presented their prototypes in last night’s production prototyping episode on Season 11 of Stars of Science.

Overcoming challenges in science and innovation, Nuha Abu Yousef, Abdulrahman Saleh Khamis, Husam Sameer, Youssef El Azouzi and Anfal Al Hamdani demonstrated their knowledge in industrial design to the jury. At this stage of the competition, any engineering concerns should have been resolved, and the participants are expected to have begun integrating aesthetic and ergonomic considerations in their design.

“The most important goal for any product is to prove it works, without question. However, it is equally important that users comprehend and appreciate the design so that they can make room for it in their daily lives,” said Professor Abdelhamid El-Zoheiry, a Stars of Science jury member. “Our Season 11 innovators have shown that they can engineer their way around technical challenges, but from this point on, they need to prove that they can market their product too.”

Husam kept his Stars of Science journey alive as his Efficient Comfort Concrete Panel passed its respective tests, successfully maintaining a cool temperature in a full-scale room for an hour and a half. The concrete panels did this by utilizing their unique hollow-core construction, which allows for improved cooling through more efficient air circulation.

However, it was the medical innovations that stole the show. The jury had the chance to try Nuha’s Active Lazy Eyelid Sticker, asking her questions about its weight and size as they took turns wearing the device. The sticker, which stimulates the muscles responsible for closing the eye in patients with afflicted facial muscles and ensure it blinks in unison with their unaffected eye, ended up garnering the highest marks from the jury.

“Nuha faced the challenges of being both a mother and an ambitious young woman in the scientific field despite the unique pressures they hold!” noted Khalid Al Jumaily, Stars of Science long-standing host. “She set a remarkable example for Arab women on how to tackle challenges in science and innovation.”

Youssef El Azouzi and his Flow Modulator Stent were not far behind in the voting, as he confidently answered every concern the jury had about his invention; while expert mentors hailed Abdulrahman Saleh Khamis for the quality of his Interactive Educational Prayer Carpet and his ability to successfully innovate a religious tool.

Unfortunately, Anfal Al Hamdani and her Dry Lime Auto Extractor fell short of the jury’s expectations. The extractor, which is designed to extract the carpel of dry citrus fruits by separating it from the pulp while preserving the nutrients, still produced unusable material. Anfal had to leave the competition, but she remained adamant that this was not the end of her innovation journey as she plans to travel to Singapore to continue working on her project and obtain a Master’s degree. “To all innovators watching; pursue your idea, no matter how small it might be. Present it to the world and challenge all the hardships you face with courage and patience,” she said.

Sadeq Qasem, Stars of Science Season 2 winner, co-hosted this week’s episode alongside the show’s longtime host Khalid Al Jumaily. Holder of the Excellence and Creativity Award in Entrepreneurship by the Emir of Kuwait, Sadeq – an innovator and entreprenur – shared some widsom with all the contestants, motivating them to stay focused on their goals and on the needs of their target markets. Sadeq also encouraged them to enjoy every minute of their Stars of Science journey, urging them to continue their work even after the show. He said, “Do not focus on the prizes and awards, focus on the future and ask yourselves – what will I do in the future with my project?”

WarnerMedia to Take Full Ownership of HBO-Branded Services in Spanish-Speaking Latin America and the Caribbean, Including All HBO, MAX, Cinemax and HBO Go Offerings

Brazil Excluded from Transaction and Upcoming Streaming Service at This Time

NEW YORK-Sunday 27 October 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- WarnerMedia has reached an agreement to buy Ole Communications’ minority stake in HBO Ole Partners, the joint venture between WarnerMedia and Ole Communications. When the transaction closes, WarnerMedia will own 100% of all HBO, MAX, Cinemax and HBO Go services in Spanish-speaking Latin America and the Caribbean. The ownership structure of HBO Brasil Partners, another joint venture between the companies that operates HBO in Brazil, is unaffected at this time. WarnerMedia and Ole Communications will continue their basic channel distribution business in Latin America.

The transaction is expected to be completed following the granting of relevant regulatory approvals. Upon completion, HBO Ole Partners will fall under the purview of Gerhard Zeiler, Chief Revenue Officer, WarnerMedia & President, WarnerMedia International Networks.

“We’re excited to own all of HBO Ole Partners, which operates one of the leading premium, subscription-based television networks in the region. The acquisition will allow us to bring localized versions of our upcoming U.S. streaming service HBO Max to consumers in Spanish speaking Latin America and the Caribbean,” said Zeiler. “We have the option to acquire the business in Brazil but are not doing so at this time. As we have said, additional, direct investment in Brazil is not currently attractive to us because of the existing regulatory uncertainty in the country. We support and remain optimistic about the ongoing efforts to amend the SeAC law to ensure the media industry has a clear and predictable regulatory framework that fosters investment and innovation.”

“WarnerMedia has been a great partner in Latin America and we are proud to have built the HBO-branded networks in the region together,” said Enrique Cusco, President and CEO of Ole Communications. “We are pleased that we will continue the business of distributing our great portfolio of basic channels in the market, a portfolio that includes Warner Channel and the channels of A+E Networks Latin America, NBCUniversal International Networks Spanish Latin America and Sony Pictures Entertainment.”

WarnerMedia and Ole Communications brought HBO programming services to the region for the first time when they founded the HBO Ole Partners joint venture in 1991 and launched a Spanish-language HBO-branded premium channel that same year. In 1994, a Portuguese-language service was launched in Brazil.
