SAN FRANCISCO - Thursday, February 21st 2013 [ME NewsWire]
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Via Licensing Corporation today announced the addition of two significant licensors to its LTE (Long Term Evolution) patent pool. China Mobile Communication Co., Ltd, and Deutsche Telekom join AT&T, Clearwire Corporation, DTVG Licensing, HP, KDDI Corporation, NTT DOCOMO, SK Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, and ZTE Corporation among the industry leading companies offering their essential LTE patents through Via Licensing’s patent pool.
By making essential patents available through a patent pool, Via Licensing’s LTE program significantly reduces the risk of litigation for organizations that are building products or services based on the LTE standard. In addition to reducing risk, the LTE patent pool reduces the time and expense incurred by patent holders and licensees by providing access to a broad portfolio of essential LTE Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) through a single, cost-effective transaction. The addition of China Mobile and Deutsche Telekom, two of the world’s largest telecommunications service providers, dramatically enhances the portfolio of LTE standard-essential patents licensed through Via’s LTE patent pool.
“The addition of these key patent holders increases the benefit that the Via LTE patent pool brings to the 4G ecosystem. The inclusion of standard-essential patents from China Mobile and Deutsche Telekom to the LTE patent pool further strengthens the program and ensures licensees worldwide access to critical LTE IPR,” said Roger Ross II, President of Via Licensing.
“The wireless industry is known for delivering significant innovation, but it is often affected by costly patent litigation and a lack of predictability surrounding the cost and availability of essential IP,” said Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, CTO of Deutsche Telekom AG. “We are pleased to participate with Via in a collaborative effort to deliver efficient and cost-effective access to LTE standard-essential patents. We believe by working with other industry leaders, we can help ensure that LTE will continue to enjoy broad adoption and accelerate mobile innovation and global communications.”
Participation in the LTE licensing program is open to all owners of LTE essential patents. Any party that believes it holds a patent essential to the LTE standard is encouraged to submit the patent for evaluation and, once qualified, to participate in this valuable offering. For information about the patent submission process, please contact John Ehler, LTE Program Director, Via Licensing, at +1 (415) 645-4746.
