KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Friday, December 6th 2013 [ME NewsWire]
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, recently played host to the 7th International Electoral Affairs Symposium 2013. Smartmatic, the elections company, was there to share its experience of deploying technology and support services.
During the event, organised by the International Centre for Parliamentary Studies (ICPS), a series of high profile speakers and leading international experts offered their perspectives on electoral administration.
Cesar Flores, Smartmatic president for the Asia Pacific region, presented the company’s successful track record of improving voter roles. An essential step towards conducting a truly legitimate election, voter databases have gained the attention of electoral commissions seeking to enhance transparency through automation.
Mr. Flores highlighted Smartmatic´s experience in Bolivia, a project in which this London-headquartered company registered over 5 million people in only 75 days. The Carter Center, an organization monitoring the Bolivian registry initiative, stated "the registration process was a logistical success, largely free of irregularities, and demonstrating the dedication of electoral officials and citizens to democratic elections."
On December 4th, during the second day of the event, Mr. Flores spoke about the different approaches Smartmatic is taking to improve manual elections using technology. Besides creating advanced hardware and software to help vote, count, transmit and consolidate results, Smartmatic has developed solutions such as the Election Operating System (EOS), to control and monitor election logistics and operational processes in real time.
The two-day symposium closed with an Awards Ceremony in which electoral authorities were recognised for the important work they carry out, their achievements and their dedication to democracy.
H.E. Tan Sri Datuk Seri Utama Pandikar Amin bin Haji Mulia, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malaysia, opened the ceremony. Smartmatic´s World Wide Sales President, Robert Cook, followed immediately with a brief speech expressing admiration for those authorities and commissioners promoting better practices and the overall improvement of election administration. He awarded the National Electoral Commission of the Republic of Slovenia as Electoral Commission of the year.
