First International Road Traffic Accident Conference Inaugurated in Abu Dhabi

Under the patronage of Lt. General H.H Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Major General Dr. Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, Director General of Central Operations at Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, inaugurated the events of the first International Road Traffic Accident Conference addressing “Causes, Challenges, and Solutions.” The conference was organized by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, in collaboration with Lifeline Healthcare Group. The conference is being held on 10-11 March at the Rosewood Hotel in Abu Dhabi.

During its 12 morning and evening sessions, the conference will evaluate 40 work papers submitted by recognized keynote traffic safety specialists from the USA, UK, Greece, Canada, Belgium, KSA, Egypt, China, and the UAE.

The papers will tackle the main causes of traffic accidents, and the proposed solutions to improve traffic safety. Additionally, the conference will witness discussions regarding many topics that review the best international practices and innovations with respect to the use of modern means of transport, in addition to reviewing the new techniques and approaches to reducing injuries’ severity and the six pillars of improving traffic safety (6Es+I); which are “Engineering, Emergency, Enforcement, Education, Evaluation, and Engagement” in addition to discussing the ways to improve integration to improve traffic safety.

Attendees will also discuss, as part of the medical subject, the modern international practices regarding reducing the severity of injuries resulting from traffic accidents. They will also review the medical tools and protocols of treating traffic accident injuries.

As part of his speech during the inaugural event, Major General Dr. Ahmed Al Raisi reasserted that the First International Road Traffic Accident Conference addressing “Causes, Challenges, and Solutions” falls within the framework of the higher leadership’s interest in benefiting from the international experiences and practices in the field of traffic safety. This helps in achieving the “Zero Traffic Fatalities” vision by 2030, in order to protect the human life that is the asset of the nation.

Major General Dr. Al Raisi also pointed out that traffic accidents have become one of the most prominent issues that threatens the safety and security of societies in different aspects. He also explained that international statistics indicate that about 1.3 million people are killed annually worldwide, in addition to the 20-50 million people that are suffering moderate injuries due to traffic collisions. For this reason, traffic accidents top the international work agenda because of the huge losses they cause to lives and properties. Hence, all concerned authorities must enhance and foster their cooperation to achieve social partnership.

Additionally, Major General Dr. Al Raisi stressed the importance of social partnership that has been defined, along with other pillars, as a main pillar of ADP’s traffic safety plan for this year. The collaboration with LLH Hospital Group in organizing the conference asserts the importance of social cooperation between Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, represented by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, and all segments of society.

Major General Dr. Al Raisi expressed his gratitude and evaluation for all the parties that contributed to preparing this important conference. He also wished that the conference comes up with recommendations that support developing and enhancing traffic safety levels, and to achieve the wise leadership’s ambitions of protecting the human assets of our beloved country.

Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil Parambath, Founder and Managing Director of LifeLine Healthcare Group, represented the organizing committee in his speech. He stressed the importance of this important traffic and medical conference that is witnessing the participation of keynote officials, leaders, and researchers in traffic accidents. Traffic experts will work together to come up with recommendations that benefit the various bodies that are concerned with traffic safety, emergency, and traffic accidents.

He also said that the conference represents a unique platform for exchanging points of view regarding the ideas of avoiding traffic accidents and the best governmental and private application methods. The conference is also a valuable opportunity for professionals to think and discuss new methodologies that enhance the efforts of facing road safety challenges. It is also an opportunity to address technological developments and the ways of increasing traffic awareness.

Furthermore, Dr. Essam Radwan from University of Central Florida in the USA asserted during his speech that traffic accidents have become an international problem. He explained that it is among the main death causes since it represents 21% of the total death causes. He also reviewed the efforts of the United Nations in facing the challenges of traffic accidents.

The conference started with a discussion regarding the identification of risk factors that cause traffic accidents in order to limit the disabilities resulting from traffic accidents, review modern technologies and techniques of halting multiple injuries, and discuss the best care practices for the long term. The first event also witnessed discussions about reducing human and financial losses resulting from traffic accidents, increasing traffic safety levels on the UAE’s roads, and viewing recent challenges that are emerging with every new technology. The conference is also showcasing technologies, inventions, strategies, and initiatives that aim to limit bad driving behaviors, and introduce the best present practices that are followed in traffic safety fields. In addition to that, the conference will study road policy patterns, vehicles’ safety, and the results of the procedures that are followed to increase the levels of creating society-based traffic safety awareness.

The inaugural event was attended by Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police. The event was also attended by a number of Abu Dhabi Police departments’ directors along with representatives from the different participating delegations and partners.

GCC Delegations Visit the Conference

Delegations from GCC countries attended the conference as part of the exchange visits taking place during the GCC Traffic Week among participating countries. The visits aim to foster joint cooperation and expertise exchange in the fields of traffic safety and awareness for the benefit of the region’s people.

Brigadier Eng. Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, Director of Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, met, on the sidelines of the conference, the delegations from the participating countries from the GCC that are participating in the GC Traffic Week in the UAE. Brigadier Al Harithi valued the delegations’ participation in the week’s events and their commitment to attend the other events. He also stressed that the celebrations of the GCC Unified Traffic Week represents the cooperation prospects among GCC countries to develop road users’ behaviors in the GCC and to foster traffic safety.
