SHENZHEN, China - Friday, April 18th 2014 [ME NewsWire]
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”) (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ), a global provider of telecommunications equipment, network solutions and mobile devices, is the exclusive supplier of the ground-air broadband system used by Air China to complete its first in-flight internet service and passenger experience test. ZTE also provided technical and service support, giving passengers a fast and convenient broadband service experience.
The test took place during a one-hour flight from Beijing to Chengdu, and passengers were able to access a variety of online services through WiFi, including WeChat, instant messaging, micro-blogging, e-mail, online gaming and online payments. Passengers were also able to experience real-time video and online movies.
Air China is the first airline to provide ground-air internet services in China, and the test was the world’s first based on 4G technology. The system adopted customised LTE wireless equipment while ground base-stations were placed along the flight route and specific air space to achieve aerial coverage. The system provides wireless data bandwidth of from 30 to 60Mbps for aircraft at different heights.
“To provide secure, efficient and convenient ground-air broadband services, ZTE made a significant investment to solve the communication problems between airborne devices and base-stations on the ground,” said Gong Yuezhong, senior vice president of ZTE.
Dr. Gong Yuezhong, senior vice president of ZTE said: “Its adaptive frequency offset algorithm and super cell technology ensure the continuity of internet service in the air, improving customer satisfaction by providing streamlined online services.”
In 2006 ZTE launched the first aerial broadband mobile system in the industry in partnership with Aircell and Qualcomm. The system provided nine US airlines, including 1,500 planes, with a range of airborne mobile services.
ZTE will continue to apply mature 4G technologies into the civil aviation industry to fulfill the demand for in-flight data services. This successful ground-air test will boost airborne internet services, further improve service quality and expand the market space for airlines.
