ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Monday, July 6th 2015 [ME NewsWire]
A total of 70 personnel from the Abu Dhabi Police have completed their training in psychological support and mental preparedness against the potential negative consequences that may result following a major accident. The training serves to ensure a high level of readiness for the staff members and to provide them with the necessary preventive methods in such incidents.
Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim Al Ameri, Head of the Emergency and Public Safety Department at Abu Dhabi Police, stressed that the department strives to motivate the emergency staff members and to ensure their safety in a manner that enables them to address all incidents in their various forms. “Due to their exposure to the risks and conditions of major accidents, it is extremely important to provide psychological support for this segment in order to address the potential negative impacts that follow such incidents,” he said. Furthermore, Colonel Al Ameri pointed out that the ongoing rehabilitation and training is to enhance the capabilities of its staff members, is conducted in accordance with the best international practices, and falls within the scope of the strategy of the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters (GHQ).
The training consists of two courses in psychological support and mental preparedness for emergency and major accidents crews, organized by the Emergency and Public Safety Department. In accordance with the best international standards, topics included supporting and protecting emergency field personnel alongside boosting their mental health. It is noteworthy that the courses contribute to raising the efficiency of the staff members through the optimal use of human resources in order to strengthen security and safety, and to reach community satisfaction.
The scientific program addressed the causes of work pressure, individual reactions when dealing with pressure, the ways to stave off its risks, and the ways to prevent and treat implications. The trainees were also introduced to the importance of the needs of those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) following a major accident. Moreover, the program highlighted the ethics and responsibility of field emergency crews when dealing with such accidents.
The two training courses, supervised by Dr. Amer Hussein, mental health consultant, aim to update and develop the knowledge amongst police officers. The courses serve to raise their efficiency and achieve high-performance levels and services in order to contribute towards saving the lives of people involved in major accidents and emergencies.
