Medical Services Department at Abu Dhabi Police organized a medical lecture regarding the risks of cancer. The lecture, which addressed the topics of awareness and prevention for cervical cancer, was attended by a number of female police officers.
The Abu Dhabi Police Medical Services Department is carrying out an awareness program that aims to educate female employees at the Ministry of Interior (MoI) about the preventative methods for cervical cancer, and to encourage them to undergo regular check-ups in order to maintain their safety.
Dr. Rasheeda Mohammad Abass, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Services Department noted that international statistics indicate that cervical cancer is the second cause of death for women worldwide. She explained that this cancer is caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which includes 15 variations of the virus.
During the lecture, Dr. Abass said that cervical cancer causes one death every hour in the Middle East. She also refuted any relation between this cancer and heredity. She stressed that the best preventative methods include cervical screenings once every three years and taking vaccinations from the age of 15 to 55.
For her part, Dr. Afaf Othman Hassan, Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist at the Medical Services Department said that the vaccination against cervical cancer provides protection for a period of 10-20 years. She also discussed topics regarding methods of prevention and identified the dangers and phases of the disease. She stressed the importance of awareness and in identifying the warning signs of the disease in order to prevent cervical cancer.
