ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, May 11th 2016 [ME NewsWire]
During a ceremony recently held in Geneva, the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 2016 honored the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Interior (MoI). This honor was to recognize the MoI’s efforts for driving several distinguished projects that reached the competition finals, including 15 distinguished Emirati projects which were among the best 88 projects globally and reflect the Ministry’s efforts in developing smart and e-services.
The Summit was hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and was co-organized by UNESCO, UNCTAD and UNDP, in collaboration with the United Nations and other related agencies, with the participation of world renowned experts and specialists.
An elite group of officers from the MoI participated in the ceremony and provided innovative contributions in various categories that were recognized at the global level.
Lt. Colonel Faisal Mohammed Al Shimmari, Executive Director of the MoI’s Smart Government Program, praised the UAE leadership’s unwavering and continuous support that helped the Ministry compete globally with its most important technical projects at the Summit. Participations showcased those submitted by the MoI’s smart government team. The projects included the MoI Smart Application in the category of ‘The role of government and all stakeholders in the promotion of ICTs for development’ (C1); the HEMAYATI Smart Bracelet System in the category of ‘Ethical dimensions of the Information Society’ (C10); the Khalifa Student Empowerment Program (Aqdar); and the Federal Vehicle Portal (Markabati) which provides integrated and comprehensive services, processes and procedures, related to all kinds of vehicles, under one umbrella.
This recognition of the UAE’s participation in the WSIS reflects the level of development witnessed by the country in various fields, particularly in the area of upgrading the provision of smart and e-services for customers by using advanced methods that enhance user experience and satisfaction.
Al Shimmari stressed the MoI’s commitment to making its mark on all regional and international events, in order to achieve the leadership and excellence that the UAE seeks, and enrich the police and security services’ international exposure, as well as that of national ministries, departments and institutions. He continued that this aims to reflect the Ministry’s commitment to a strong presence within the international events agenda, along with scientific, technological and research forums.
The WSIS provides a prestigious global platform to coordinate international efforts related to communications, IT and digital content.
Commenting further, he said: “All of the UAE’s participating projects reflect the strategic developments that are emerging from the UAE Vision 2021, and from the government’s strategy. The projects also reassert the scientific approach used to conduct benchmarking processes of advanced services and projects. For its part, this reflects the strategic planning of these projects and services that share a common goal of enhancing customer satisfaction and improving the UAE’s competitiveness.”
It is worth mentioning that the WSIS is managed by the ITU and aims to develop a global vision to keep pace with the challenges posed by the information society, in order to implement developmental objectives set out in the UN General Assembly Resolution 60/252 and the United Nations Group on the Information Society.
