Abu Dhabi Residency Celebrates World Heritage Day

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, April 19th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

The Directorate General of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Abu Dhabi participated in the activities of the World Heritage Day, as part of its keenness to communicate with society and to preserve the authentic national heritage of the forefathers.

Colonel Yussef Ismail Al Khouri, the Deputy Director General, and a number of officers attended an exhibition of handmade traditional products and handicrafts, which was organized through the participation of female employees from the Al Dhabyaniah Committee at the directorate. The exhibition included traditional household pottery, food, women’s clothing, henna, and incense.

It is noteworthy that on the 18th of April, the UAE celebrated World Heritage Day alongside other countries in the recognition of each country’s unique humanitarian and cultural heritage. As each country has its own diverse heritage, each nation celebrated in their own way - but all have come together in a way that honors historical and archeological monuments and sites. This year’s World Heritage Day celebrated human achievements of all kinds, all around the world.

According to the intergovernmental agreement approved by UNESCO in Paris during the year 1972, World Heritage Day annually falls on the 18th of April for the protection of human heritage and heritage sites. Human cultural heritage is classified as a cultural aspect or place that can be natural or manmade, and that holds a special cultural or physical significance. An example of a world heritage site could include: ancient ruins, monuments, significant architectural works, cities, parks, mountains, lakes, and deserts.
