During Suahil Al Marar’s Majlis
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Friday, November 20th 2015 [ME NewsWire]
Participants in Suhail Mohammed Al Marar‘s majlis, held in Khalifa City in Abu Dhabi, praised the efforts exerted by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police to enhance communication with the segments of society as a part of the ‘Councils are Schools’ initiative and stressed the need to strengthen those efforts. The initiative aims at promoting traffic culture; increasing compliance with the laws and regulations of traffic; and reducing the causes that lead to traffic accidents.
Colonel Jamal Al Ameri, Chief of Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, said that awareness-raising efforts are ongoing within the ‘Councils are Schools’ initiative. He noted that the traffic awareness lecture in the majlis is no. 23. This reflects the unrelenting efforts exerted to maintain human wealth, out of the firm belief that people are the pillar and the cornerstone of any nation and protecting people against traffic accidents and their resulting deaths, severe injuries and negative social impacts is a must.
During the lecture, Colonel Al Ameri talked about the change of speed limits on the Abu Dhabi - Al Ghuwaifat road, which has been introduced as of November 15th. He confirmed that reducing the speed limit aims mainly to preserve the lives and property of road users. To this end, government bodies are endeavoring to serve the public, by building an advanced roads infrastructure according to the highest quality engineering standards, notably during the on-going work to widen the Abu Dhabi – Al Ghuwaifat road.
Colonel Al Ameri, called upon motorists to adhere to the designated speed limits in order to maintain their safety. This would help to boost safety levels and enhance protection for all road users across the Abu Dhabi Emirate.
Moreover, Colonel Al Ameri tackled the appropriate measures for safe driving during changing weather conditions, which include low horizontal visibility due to fog. He encouraged drivers to pay more attention while driving in the rain and to refrain from braking suddenly – as this may cause the vehicle to slide due to the decreased efficiency of the brakes on wet surfaces.
He also discussed traffic safety during changing weather conditions that carry dust, and advised motorists to be vigilant and cautious to be able to control their vehicle. He also highlighted the need to be mindful of any obstructions such as sand on the surface of the road or remnants from building materials, or tree trunks, or palm fronds. He warned drivers in general from parking near construction sites or under trees during strong winds.
Furthermore, Colonel Al Ameri urged drivers to follow the weather forecasts in order to be prepared to drive in any weather condition. He emphasized the importance of leaving safe and sufficient space between vehicles, to avoid overtaking other vehicles, and to drive at an appropriate speed that is suitable for the surrounding conditions.
He also warned drivers from using their hazard lights and to use their low-beams in foggy conditions. “Drivers should only use their hazards to indicate that they have come to a full stop, or if there is a risk on the road,” he noted.
“If there is a minor accident or a sudden mechanical breakdown of the vehicle during conditions of fog or rain, drivers must remove their vehicles off the road and park at the nearest safe zone,” he said. “Abiding by such protocol ensures both the safety of the driver and a smooth flow of traffic.”
