The Ministry of Interior marked the World Civil Defense Day under the slogan “Disaster Reduction within Sustainable Development”. Major General Rashid Thani Al Matroushi, Acting General Commander-in-Chief of Civil Defense, stressed that the countrywide observance of the World Civil Defense Day reflects the importance of the role of civil defense in both sustainable development and in the protection of life and property in various locations and in all circumstances. “It also highlights the commitment and keenness of our leadership to care for the Civil Defense sector and improve its services that are provided to all segments of the community and various sectors,” said Major Gen. Al Matroushi.
He added: “The UAE is endowed with a secure environment and a solid infrastructure. It is also extremely generous when it comes to supporting victims of natural disasters and calamities, and is proud to be in the lead of support interventions for disaster-affected communities around the world. As a member of the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA), the Directorate General of Civil Defense operates based on a clear and integrated national and federal strategy that is consistent with the federal government’s strategy.”
The Directorate General of Civil Defense organized an outreach exhibition at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Centre (ADNEC), which showcased state-of-the-art safety equipment and a number of vehicles used in fire and rescue operations, as well the latest awareness pamphlets and brochures. Moreover, the Directorate General held a one-week awareness campaign at the Mushrif Mall, during which a large number of press releases, publications, and awareness brochures were distributed to the public.
The Civil Defense Department in the Western Region also commemorated this occasion by distributing awareness flyers and publications to the public. It is noteworthy that these exhibitions are in pursuance with the Abu Dhabi Directorate General of Civil Defense’s keenness to promote partnership with all members of civil society and its institutions, and to celebrate this occasion together with citizens and residents.
On the same note, the Civil Defense Department in Al Ain also celebrated the occasion under the slogan “Disaster Reduction within Sustainable Development, 2015”, with a sector of the Al Ain Municipality in the Green Mubazzarah area.
In his speech inaugurating the event, Lt. Col. Rashid Hamar Ain Al Darmaki, Head of Al Ain Civil Defense Department, highlighted the importance of strengthening the policies developed by the Ministry of Interior in order to disseminate knowledge and enlightenment regarding security and safety precautions amongst all segments of society. Lt. Col. Al Darmaki also stressed the keenness of the Directorate General to promote awareness and direction regarding prevention methods, ways to leverage the available capacities, and how to cooperate with various stakeholders.
Adding further, the Head of the Al Ain Civil Defense Department noted the importance of the principle of partnership, as exemplified through the promotion and formation of volunteer teams. In a bid to assist in situations requiring rapid intervention, the volunteer teams are trained in fire, ambulance, and rescue operations. Lt. Col. Al Darmaki called on the civil society organizations to qualify individuals and increase awareness around ways to behave in the event of emergency. Moreover, he praised the active cooperation of civil societies with the civil defense, and the awareness of the citizens and residents in the importance of the role of civil defense. Concluding, he highlighted the importance of cooperating with the civil defense entities and in the implementation of the general safety instructions.
The events featured: a musical concert presented by the military police band, a performance by the Al Ain K9 Security Inspection Section, a theatrical performance highlighting the importance of having a fire extinguisher around houses, and cultural awareness competitions to the public.
Then, Lt. Col. Rashid Al Darmaki inaugurated the exhibition held on the sidelines of the events and toured the pavilion of the participating entities, including the Public Relations Department at the Al Ain Police Directorate, Al Ain Traffic Police of Al Ain, Al Ain Distribution Company, the Ambulance and Rescue Department, the Red Crescent Authority, the Security Inspection Unit, the Community Police, the Identity Authority, and the Health Authority.
