MoI Council Calls for Reinforcing Fire Prevention and Protection Requirements

Participants at the Ministry of Interior’s council, hosted by Al Muta’red Saif Al Afari at his residence in Al Ain under the theme “Services of the civil defense, emergency and safety sectors”, called to raise the awareness of the public regarding the services of the civil defense sector. They also called for enhancing awareness regarding the proper ways to handle and prevent fires, and to promote prevention and safety of citizens and residents of the UAE.

The council is aprt of the series of awareness councils organized by the Law Respect Culture Bureau, in cooperation with the Security Media Department at the General Directorate of Security Support at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. The council was moderated by the media personality Rashid Mohamed Al Nuaimi, Director of Al Khaleej Newspaper Office in Al Ain. The participants unanimously agreed on the importance of reinforcing social awareness on fire prevention in order to achieve safety for all, as well as protecting children and raising the awareness of domestic workers regarding general safety procedures.

The host welcomed the guests, and praised the efforts of the police leadership and the Ministry; represented by the Law Respect Culture Bureau to raise the awareness of the public. He also expressed his happiness to host the council, which discusses important topics, related to the services of the civil defense, emergency and safety sectors. Meanwhile, media personality Rashid Al Nuaimi stressed the importance of the councils held by the Ministry of Interior, in spreading social and intellectual awareness amongst members of the public.

Major Nasser Al Afari spoke about the major causes of fires. He pointed that most fires are caused by negligence and gas or flammable chemicals leaks, as well as candles, cigarettes and heaters, in addition to electrical shortages among other reasons, combined with low awareness of safety standards. He stressed the importance of adhering to general safety standards and regulations in commercial buildings and facilities, which are set by the civil defense sector at the Ministry of Interior.

Policeman Mohamed Al Alawi gave a presentation about the causes of fires and means of prevention, as well as the types of fire extinguishers and how to use them to put out a home fire.

Participants called for intensifying awareness campaigns for members of the public regarding the optimized use of power sources inside residences, facilities and institutions, as well as the use of sustainable energy sources, which help reduce power networks overload; ultimately reducing the number of fire incidents, caused by overloaded electrical connections. Participants also called upon parents to follow up on their children and keep them away from dangerous places, and to follow safety and prevention guidelines to protect lives and properties.

Participants also stressed the importance of equipping residences with fire alarms and extinguishers and teaching family members how to use general safety measures, how to handle fires, as well as keeping matches and lighters away from the reach of children. They also stressed the importance of conducting periodic inspection of heating and cooling devices and making sure to put off cigarettes after smoking and preparing safe storage for flammable material outside of residences.

Participants in the council hailed the efforts of the Ministry of Interior, in promoting the culture of safety and security through year-long awareness campaigns, using direct communication mediums; such as the councils, lectures and exhibitions, as well as the various print and audiovisual media channels and social media, to raise awareness among all segments of society.
